Research

The Institute serves as the leading industry resource regarding short line safety culture, as evidenced by extensive and continuing research and analysis, benchmarking data, best practices, and strategies and tools to impart that knowledge to short line and regional railroads, Class I railroads, government agencies, Congress, and the public.

In support of this mission, the Institute provides access to research gathered through its safety culture assessments, publicly available data, research literature, subject matter experts, and other sources to short line and regional railroads.

In addition, the Institute will undertake primary research to respond to emerging requests for information based on statistics, trends, and results of safety culture assessments.

The Institute works closely with the ASLRRA and the Volpe Center for Research in developing and enhancing the assessment process, and in defining ongoing research.
